In countries where incomes are low, healthcare fees are for the most part the responsibility of the population. The majority of people therefore cannot afford to pay for their care. Those who are ill only go to hospital as a last resort when it is often already too late.
Initiative Développement (ID), in addition to its work of capacity building, seeks new modes of finance in order to facilitate access to healthcare for the most vulnerable, and supports free healthcare centres for AIDS sufferers. As we think preventing illnesses is just as important as treating the ill, each of our action programmes includes a section on “communication” for vulnerable people: the prevention of AIDS amongst the young and mothers, raising awareness amongst women of the risks of home births and so on.
This is the context in which we are participating in the action programme linked to the fifth and sixth United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals: “Improve maternal health” and “Combat HIV/AIDS.”
