Initiative Development (ID) is the only western NGO operating in Anjouan (since 1996) and Mohéli (since 2006), underprivileged islands in the Comores archipelago which act as uncompensated reservoirs for candidates for immigration to Mayotte — so close, and so rich. Since 1994, a tragic ballet has played out in the "death row of the sea" where boats full of people deported from Mayotte cross those which, having barely returned to Anjouan, depart again just as quickly in small boats, these makeshift boats in which dozens of men, women, and children are lost each year.
Even if we cannot claim to have sheltered these oceangoing families from the misery that surrounds them, we have been working for over ten years on improving basic services and security, by supporting the launch and organization of professionals: the Anjouan and Moheli Water System Associations (Unions des Comités d’eau d’Anjouan et de Mohéli), which today provide water management for the two islands, as well as CAP and MAEECHA, two Comorian NGO's which handle health and education.
Initiative Development (ID) also works towards energy efficiency, by providing poor families with economical wood stoves and working to improve distillation of essential oils.
